One of the most exciting parts of the 2014 Olympic curling events was watching the daily outfits of the Norway men’s team. While the other country’s teams wore the same uniform each match, the team from Norway brought 8 separate pairs of very unique pants for each match. To say these pants were loud would be an understatement. They were screaming at the top of their lungs, “look at me, look at me!” These pants made it fun to tune in each day to see what the fashion du jour of team Norway would be, and hopefully more international teams will follow Norway’s lead in the future.
The pants were made by an American company called Loudmouth Golf which is based in Sonoma County, CA. The company has actually been around since 2000, but it really only got national attention when professional golfer John Daly began wearing their pants during events in 2009. Then it was actually in 2010 at the Vancouver Winter Olympics when team Norway first donned the flamboyant trousers. They only wore one variety of Loudmouth Golf pants in these Olympic Games, but it was definitely noticed. Fans of the team’s pants actually created a Facebook fan page for team Norway’s pants and they drew 500,000 followers! It was good news for Loudmouth Golf as sales tripled after team Norway was seen both curling and looking like rock stars out there on the ice.
Team Norway knew they had to out-do themselves in the next Olympics, and they delivered. Each match a new pair of Loudmouth pants, and each one more daring and flamboyant than the last. If one asks the casual viewer of the Sochi Olympic curling events what they remember, team Norway’s pants have to be the runaway leader. Unfortunately for all involved, team Norway was eliminated in round-robin stage of curling so viewers were denied of seeing even more possible pants as the games moved on, and most importantly, those pants up on the podium accepting a medal. There should have been a secondary medal presentation to Norway’s curling team for being so fashion-forward, so ahead of the curve, and so willing to not take themselves as seriously as all the other teams. The world can’t wait to see what they have in store for the 2018 games!
